The crucifix of the Christ of Esquipulas was found on Good Friday, 1810, by Don Bernardo Abeyta. El Santuario (The Shrine) is comprised by two chapels (the chapel of the Christ of Esquipulas and the chapel of the Holy Child of Atocha). The chapel of the Christ of Esquipulas was built between 1813 and 1816 by Don Bernardo Abeyta with the approval of the bishop of Durango (Mexico). The chapel of the Holy Child of Atocha was built in 1857 by Don Severiano Medina. Since the beginning, both chapels have been a place of healing for many pilgrims and visitors. The chapel of the Christ of Esquipulas is dedicated to the sufferings, pain (passion) of Jesus Christ, while the chapel of the Holy Child is dedicated to the childhood of Jesus, to the Holy Family and to families.
